Overview of Polling Units in Nigeria

A Polling Unit (PU) is the smallest electoral unit designated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) where registered voters assemble on election day to be accredited and cast their ballots.

For over 25 years, Nigeria operated with 119,973 polling units established in 1996 for a voter population of approximately 50 million citizens. To address voter congestion, reduce travel distances, and improve citizen access to the ballot box, INEC expanded and converted existing Voting Points (VPs) into autonomous Polling Units, increasing the national total to 176,846 Polling Units nationwide.

Understanding Your Polling Unit Code

Every Polling Unit in Nigeria has a unique identifying alphanumeric code formatted as State / LGA / Ward / PU Number (e.g. 01/02/03/004).

01 - State Code

The 2-digit numerical identifier corresponding to the state of registration.

02 - LGA Code

The 2-digit code for the Local Government Area where the unit is situated.

03 - Ward Code

The 2-digit identifier for the Registration Area (RA) or electoral ward.

004 - Unit Number

The 3-digit sequential number assigned to the specific voting station.

How to Check Your Polling Unit Online

Check Your Voter Card (PVC)

Locate your 8-digit or 9-digit Polling Unit code printed on the front of your Permanent Voter Card (PVC).

Access the Official CVR / PU Portal

Click the "Find Polling Unit" button below to open the official INEC portal (cvr.inecnigeria.org/pu).

Election Day Guidelines at the Polling Unit

Simultaneous Accreditation and Voting

Accreditation and voting commence concurrently at 8:30 AM and close at 2:30 PM on scheduled election days.

No PVC, No Voting

Only voters who physically present their valid Permanent Voter Card (PVC) and are verified by BVAS are permitted to vote.

Queue Integrity

All voters in the queue at 2:30 PM will be accredited and allowed to cast their ballot before voting officially concludes.

Secret Ballot Principle

Marking of the ballot paper must take place privately inside the voting cubicle to guarantee the secrecy of your choice.
