>INEC proud of the Process that produced Yar'adua as President Elect!
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is satisfied and proud of the process through which Umaru Musa Yar’adua of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious in the just concluded presidential and national assembly elections. Speaking at a colourful ceremony yesterday in which the President-elect was given his Certificate of Return by the Commission, INEC Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu, said the testimony of the success of the 2007 general elections was the emergence of Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’adua as winner of the presidential election for which INEC was “satisfied and proud”. Professor Iwu told the assemblage of colourful politicians and journalists who turned out to witness the ceremony that the figures contained in the result sheets collated at the state level for the presidential election paralleled the scores transmitted electronically from the polling units and local governments across the country. He affirmed that Yar’adua of the PDP won the presidential election in a free and fair contest. He remarked that when the report of the 2007 election campaign, which INEC monitored as provided for in the Constitution, is released, it will show that Yar’adua was the only candidate that covered all parts of the country. He said the report will also show that 18 out of the 25 candidates who contested in the presidential election did not even have a single campaign poster in the major cities of the Federation and that twenty of them had no single advertisement in the dailies. Professor Iwu regretted that one of the presidential contestants spent more time attacking the Commission than in telling Nigerians why they should vote for him, hence his woeful showing at the polls.
