INDIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER VISITS INEC

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Maurice Iwu, has acknowledged the immense support and contribution which Nigeria’s relationship with India has had on the evolution of electoral process in Nigeria.

Professor Iwu who was speaking in his office when the Indian High Commissioner in Nigeria paid him a courtesy call, said Nigeria and India share some characteristics including high population and land mass that could some time present hindrances to the conduct of electoral activities.

He said that India’s use of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) during the last election two years ago contributed to the acclaimed huge success of the elections in India and underscores the benefits which any country stands to enjoy from a highly mechanized electoral process confers on the polity even where there is a perceived low level of education.

The INEC Chairman assured the Indian envoy that the Commission will continue to nurture the already existing cordial relations between it and Indian companies whose technological successes have providing alternatives in the Commission’s search for viable options in the implementation of the logistic arrangement and the Electronic Voting System.

The Indian High Commission said he was in the INEC Chairman’s office to commend the Commission on its activities so far and solicit continued cooperation with his country.
