SWEARING-IN OF NEW RESIDNENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONERS
Ten (10) out of the thirteen (13) newly appointed Resident
Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) were sworn in this morning at
the Commission’s headquarters Abuja.
Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Maurice Iwu, expressed
happiness with the caliber of professionals appointed as
Resident Electoral Commissioners at this time of the Commission’s
most demanding period as it approaches the conduct of the
2007 General Elections.
Prof. Iwu reminded the Commissioners of the uniqueness of
their job pointing out that they must maintain a firm grip
of their character and be steadfast in the face of all the
provocations and political harangue that is most likely
to come their way during the discharge of their responsibilities.
The Chairman who called the new Commissioners the new members
of a team of fifty charged with delivering a credible elections
in 2007, also enjoined them to see their present positions
as a trust which they must discharge to the best interest
of all Nigerians. He said the post of an Electoral Commissioner
carried with it enormous responsibility which only good
character and not background can sustain. “You should
know that you have an account to render to your God at the
end of your assignment”, Prof. Iwu concluded.
The newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners and
their states of origin are as follows:
1) Dr. Humphrey Umanene - Anambra
2) Barrister Josiac C. Uwazuruonye - Imo
3) Mrs Maria Owi - Bayelsa
4) Mr Gabriel Ada - Cross River
5) Barrister Austin Okoyie - Edo
6) R. Ayo Adekeye - Ekiti
7) Kabiru Ahmed - Jigawa
8) Nasir A. Ayilara - Kwara
9) Abubakar Ahmadu Mohamed - Nasarawa
10) Martins Okunfolami - Ondo
11) Illiya Audu - Taraba
