INEC RELEASES GRANT TO POLITICAL PARTIES

The Independent National Electoral Commission has released to all the 37 political parties the sum of 180 million which represents 30% of the total 600 million naira allocated as grants to political parties in the country.

The National Commissioner in charge of Political Party Monitoring Committee (PPMC) of the Commission, Dr. Ismael Igbani disclosed this while briefing newsmen in his office.

Dr. Igbani explained that the 30% grant is a mandatory allocation for the parties on an equal basis to assist the political parties run their affairs. He said that the balance of 70% of the grant will be shared among the parties according to the number of seats they secure in the National Assembly.

The National Commissioner said that the Commission now expects all political parties to put all their administrative machinery in motion to enable them commence the organization of their respective primaries for the selection of candidates for the 2007 elections. Commissioner Igbani disclosed that four political parties have indicated their intention to hold their primaries adding that INEC would monitor the exercise in compliance with the law.
