POPULATION FIGURES TO DETERMINE CONSTITUENCY DELIMITATION

The Independent National Electoral Commission may undertake the a review of constituency delimitation before the 2007 elections if the National Population Commission releases the figures of the 2006 census.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Maurice Iwu gave this explanation when the Oro Political Forum from Akwa Ibom State paid him a courtesy call recently. He said the Commission is legally expected to conduct a review of the delimitation of constituencies after every population census pointing out that once the results of the 2006 census is released the Commission would look at all the requests in respect of the creation of constituencies. The Chairman however explained that in a situation where the census figures are not released before the 2007 elections, the Commission will consider the requests along with others, after the elections.

The Chairman of the Oro Political Forum, Dr. Emmanuel Inwang, had earlier congratulated the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Maurice Iwu for the laudable initiatives the electoral body is implementing under his leadership.

Dr. Inwang said only Nigerians who did not have the interest and well being of the country at heart will object to the innovations which the INEC Chairman is putting in place to ensure that all subsequent elections in the country were free, fair and acceptable.

The Oro Political Forum said it was in Abuja to present its request for the creation of its own Federal Constituency to ensure that its high population is adequately represented at the National Assembly.
