INEC COMMENDS SENATE

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Maurice Iwu, has commended the Senate for quashing a motion in the upper chamber of the National Assembly seeking to condemn INEC for adopting the Electronic Voting System (EVS). Describing the act as courageous on the part of the Upper House, Professor Iwu said that the action of the Senate has demonstrated the reign of reason for patriotism which is crucial to democracy.

The Chairman who was speaking at the Commission’s Retreat in Calabar also pleaded with the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Electoral Bill in order to give the Commission the legal leverage to execute its activities leading up to 2007 General Elections.

The Chairman also stated that the Commission has put all necessary machinery in motion and will conduct the 2007 General Elections creditably and in line with the approved Electoral Act.

It would be recalled that the Commission organized a Retreat that took place in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital between Monday, 22nd and Wednesday 24th May, 2006 as part of its preparations toward the 2007 general elections.
