VOTING REGISTRATION

  1. Is registration transferable upon relocating within the Country?
    In accordance with the 2002 Electoral Act, a voter may request a transfer of registration information from the Residential Electoral Commissioner upon provision of suitable documentation.


  2. How are matters of suspicious names on the register handled?
    As provided in the Electoral Act, such name(s) should be reported to the officials at the display ground for proper investigation and necessary action.



  3. Can a lost temporary voters' card be replaced?
    The Electoral Act 2002 made provision for replacement of a lost card "... Whenever a Voters' card is lost, destroyed, defaced torn or otherwise damaged, the voter shall, at least seven days before polling, apply in person to the Electoral Officer or any other Officer duly authorized for the purpose by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, stating the circumstances of that loss, destruction or damage". The law further states". If the Electoral Officer or that other Officer is satisfied as to the circumstances of the loss, destruction, defacement or damage of the Voter's card, he shall issue to the Voter a duplicate copy of the clearly marked or printed on it, showing the date issue. (Electoral act 2002 Part I, Section 8)



  4. What does Electoral Act say about under-age voting?

    In accordance with the Electoral Act, INEC has put in place the following measures to prevent under-age voting:

    •  Party and Security agents at the polling station have been empowered to provide information on anybody whom in their opinion, is an under-age voter.

    •  The Poll Clerk shall question such person and check his/her particulars against those contained in the register.

    •  If the Poll Clerk is satisfied, the Presiding Officer shall issue such person a tendered ballot paper with which he/she can vote.

    •  If the party or security agent still objects, the poll clerk shall write the words, "protested against for underage" against his/her name in the register, check the back of his/her card to ascertain that he/she has not voted elsewhere.

    •  If the voter's name cannot be found in the register or has been marked for the election, a tendered ballot paper will be issued to him so he may vote.
